Skiers Thumb Update- 4 weeks post surgery

by louisstack on May 1, 2010

It was just under 4 weeks ago that my thumb was reconstructed using existing tissues.  I have been in a brace that has effectively kept me from using my thumb for any normal tasks.  As expected it has been somewhat pain full but mostly the good tingling pain of healing tissue, ligament and bone.  The formed half cast that Velcros on is so much better than the old school plaster cast this cannot be cleaned and restricts mobility on every joint and not just the one healing.

Works OK but not great

Here is an image of my brace as I type and as you can see is a less than perfect but  8 weeks is a small price to pay to get a functional right hand back.  Below is a picture of my 2 thumbs today, side by side.  As you can see there is lots or scare tissue that will breakdown via rehab and self massage. All and all this is not so exciting of a blog. But, if you have had a similar hand injury you may find the recovery info interesting.  As far as I can tell ,  it was worth correcting this injury as over time my thumb would have just gotten weaker and weaker.

Looking good

It is nice to have the benefit of an apposing thumb and like everything else,it is easy to take it for granted until it goes away.  Here is a link to our Hand Rehab Products if you want to see what I will be using for my hand in four more weeks.
