When to Replace your Foam Roller
Does your foam roller look like this? If so, ‘Dump the chump”! From top NCAA programs to the weekend warrior, many people do not recognize the signs to end a relationship with their foam roller. Fitterfirst believes you need to ‘Dump the chump’ and get rid of foam rollers that are past their lifespan. Foam Rollers are fairly inexpensive piece of fitness equipment, so don’t let them outstay their welcome. Watch for these signs of degradation:
Deformed Foam Rollers
Over time and with lots of usage – it is normal for Foam Rollers to become depressed and deformed. This is the #1 sign that it needs to be replaced. Foam Rollers do not need to be “broken in”, they are optimized for use when brand new. Concave foam rollers will limit the body’s ability to release and relax properly. Do not try to “break in” your foam roller by bending it – this can create chips, holes, and cracks.
Dirty Foam Rollers
Discoloration with a ring around the edge is the #2 sign to replace. The majority of people use public rollers at their local gyms and training rooms. This can be a breading ground for bacteria. Think about it, most of us roll on a unclean surface, are sweaty after a hard workout, and do not wipe foam roller after using them. Avoid using discolored rollers at the gym, and when your personal one gets that dingy – it’s time to replace it.
Recycle Foam Rollers
Most foam rollers on the market are made up of expanded poly styrene (EPS) and ethyl vinyl acetate (EVA). Both types of rollers can be recycled. Check with your local recycling agency for details.
